Wabi-Sabi – the beauty of imperfection. Kintsugi: the art of repairing things we love or need, with the repair or scar adding to its beauty.
Japanese concepts but with a worldwide resonance and definitely part of the MastaPlasta ethos – and we reckon our customers’ too!
On the other hand, it seems increasingly easy to ditch something that’s not quite working and buy new. Just press a couple of buttons on your phone and stuff is replaced, often cheaply, and actually delivered to your door – it seems so much easier than fixing stuff. To us, that is why making it easy to fix stuff is really important; because it is kind of human to take the easy option.
Taking the easy option is so easy we can forget it still leaves us with the problem of how to get rid of the broken stuff or stuff that is no longer useful. We saw someone put a pair of crutches in our recycling bins yesterday – no council accepts things like this in the recycling bins. They belong in a charity store or at the hospital or even given to your GP to hand out. We rescued the crutches and took them to a charity store. And let’s not mention fly-tippers – where the world is seen as your very own bin; we can’t help but wonder what goes on in their minds.
How can we make it easier for people to do the right thing? It’s a question we have to keep asking.
